Lancaster Estate 2004 Nicole's Proprietary Red
Lancaster Estate 2004 Nicole's Proprietary Red: 5 - Star California Red Blend: Quarterly Review of Wine- By QRW Tasting Team
Summer 2008
Plush, pure, round, velvety, black fruit, coffee and roasted nut flavors.
May 16, 2007
Inky ruby. Lush, sexy bouquet of dark berries, candied plum and oak spices. Thick, weighty and powerful, with creamy blackberry and cherry compote flavors picking up hints of clove and mace on the back. Tannins build slowly through the finish but don't intrude on the velvety, sweet dark fruit. Fans of big California cabernet will really dig this. David Ramey is the consulting winemaker here.

The philosophy when making this wine is to work with the best of what the vineyard provides. The wine is delicious. The seems a bit more apparent than the 2001, which seems reasonable. The focus is well extracted black stone fruit, crème brulee, toasty chocolate, and spicy mixed red and black berries. Drink: 2006-2014.

Co-proprietor, Nicole Simpkins, has the final say on what goes into her namesake blend. It is a careful barrel selection of the best lots the winery produces annually. It gets more new oak than the Red Blend. Comprised of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Malbec, the wine is as elegant and supple as you could ask for. There are hints of rose petal and cherry blossom in the nose followed by ripe currant and mocha. On the palate flavors of chocolate, plum, spicy black cherry and licorice are complemented by the gentle tannins that will make this wine delicious for consuming now through 2010.

Best known for its Proprietary Red, the Alexander Valley Estate produced a mere 150 cases of the exquisite single-vineyard reserve Cabernet Sauvignon in 1999. Intensely balanced with tremendous breadth of flavor (from black cherry to savory cedar), this tightly structured, vibrant cabernet lingers long, enveloping the palette.

Rich, intense and concentrated, with layers of complex earth, currant, black cherry, cedar and spice. Tightly wound, too, with wonderful balance, focus and length. Best from 2004 through 2012. 150 cases made.
