Lancaster Estate 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon

Lancaster Estate 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon: Wine Enthusiast, 95 Cellar Selection:                                                                                          October 2008 Buying Guide

A massive wine that absolutely demands time in the cellar, Lancaster's '05 is nearly all Cabernet, with tiny amounts of the other four Bordeaux varities.  It stuns with the power and authenticity of its hilly Cabernet origins, offering vast black currant, orange rind, anise and smoky oak flavors that implode on the palate.  But the tannins are hard.  It should blossom and fully come into its own after 2010.  (Download PDF)

Lancaster Estate 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon: Connoisseur's Guide to California Wine, 91:                                                                          Volume 32 Issue 10:  August 2008

A bit brooding and closed at present, this substantial young wine delivers plenty of depth and fruit from the start.  It slowly unfolds to show plenty of dense, curranty fruit aligned with lots of sweet, slightly vanillin oak, and its incisive varietal flavors stay the course even as ample tannins come into play.  (Download PDF)

Lancaster Estate 2005 Cuvée

Lancaster Estate 2005 Sophia's Hillside Cuvée: Wine Enthusiast, 90:                                                                                                               October 2008 Buying Guide                                                                                                                                                                                                 It's fair to call this a junior version of Lancaster's more expensive, superb Bordeaux-style wines.  Like them, it's rich in black currant and cedar flavors, and quite tannic, a wine that needs a few years to come around.  It's also a touch more rustic.  Three-quarters Cabernet Sauvignon, one-quarter Merlot.  (Download PDF)

Lancaster Estate 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon : #2, Top 100 Wines: Wine Enthusiast- By Joe Czerwinski

Lancaster burst on the scene with enormous buzz, perhaps before they really earned it. Steadily but surely, they've built up the wine, and the '04 is the best ever.

Lancaster burst on the scene with enormous buzz, perhaps before they really earned it. Steadily but surely, they've built up the wine, and the '04 is the best ever. It's a gorgeous Cab, softly complex, rich in cassis, cherry, spice and oak flavors anchored with warm, earthy tannins. In fact, the earthiness stands it in good contrast to Napa Valley, making it wholesome and complete.

Deep ruby. Focused cherry and blackcurrant aromas lifted by a mineral element. The brisk palate features spicy dark berry flavors, silky tannins and a refreshingly bitter quality on the back. Nicely persistent and elegant in style, with the concentration to age.

Lancaster Estate 2002 Red Wine

This is the first vintage with David Ramey on board consulting with winemaker Jennifer Higgins. The wines have magically added complexity, mostly in the aromatics; a delicate perfume of jasmine and nectarine blossoms. The dynamic palate focuses this wine remarkably well showing black currant, boysenberry, and perfectly tender black fig. I expect the rating on this wine to possibly increase when tasted closer to release. Drink: 2007-2015.

There’s a classic Alexander Valley softness and herbaceousness to the cherry, cassis, blueberry and oak flavors of this Cab, and while it’s rich and balanced enough to drink with the best steak you can find, it should age for a while. Best now through 2009.

The sexy, delicious, up-front 1999 Proprietary Red Estate exhibits abundant quantities of smoky black currants and cherries in a medium-bodied, elegant, Bordeaux-like format. With fine purity as well as nicely integrated wood, acidity, and tannin, it will drink well for 7-10 years.
