A true representation of the unique terroir of our 53 acres of hillside vineyards. Our 2009 Estate Cabernet is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec, 6% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Layered and finely grained tannins create a dense, tightly knit structure and backbone that provides remarkable depth, concentration and purity. Aromas of black cherry, clove, nutmeg, and blackberry are followed by subtle notes of red plum, cassis and vanilla on the palate. The persistent and elegant finish exhibits hints of cocoa, dark fruit and a lingering minerality. Consistent with Lancaster Estate’s commitment to making wines of authenticity and place, all of our wines are estate grown, produced and bottled. Native yeasts are used for primary fermentation while secondary malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in barrel. To preserve the truest expression of our estate, the Lancaster Estate 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon was gently fined and then bottled unfiltered.

Sur lie aged 24 months in 100% French oak from the Nevers and Allier forests in central France. We chose barrels from several coopers including Darnajou, Taransaud, Demptos, Ermitage, Saury, Bel Air and Sylvain. 80% of the barrels were new and all were coopered using a combination of Medium, Medium Plus, Medium Long, and Heavy toast levels to provide better integration and balance.

A dry winter and warm spring caused the vines to wake early. Late March brought spring rains which supported vigorous growth prior to bloom. Even pollination and berry set led to a balanced crop. Mild early summer weather led to a very warm August which encouraged ripening. Our well-established blocks L-1, L-2, T-8, T-6 provided the foundation of the Lancaster Estate 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon while newer, high density plantings from blocks L18, L17, L-14, and L-16 rounded out the final blend.
